Assistance Dogs International

As I mentioned briefly in the "About Me" tab, I found Canine Partners for Life through an organization entitled Assistance Dogs International (ADI). ADI is a worldwide coalition of not-for-profit organizations that train and place Assistance Dogs with people who have disabilities. Their objectives are to 1) establish standards of excellence in Assistance Dog acquisition, training, and partnership, 2) create communication and learning between their member programs, and 3) educate the public.

Assistance Dogs International does not treat their accredited member programs lightly. ADI has a strict list of standards that a member program must meet in order to become accredited. These standards include criteria for administrating program operations, ethical treatment of clients, humane dog training methods, proper healthcare for the dogs, cleanliness of the training facility, suitability screening for both clients and dogs, criteria for matching dogs with clients, procedure for puppy raising, and proper training and evaluation for owner-trained Assistance Dog teams. The standards are there to ensure excellence in training an Assistance Dog to mitigate a clients disability or disabilities, exceptional service from each accredited member program, providing a comprehensive education on utilizing and training of the Assistance Dog, and a thorough understanding of all public access with an Assistance Dog.

If you are looking for an Assistance Dog, or just need to look up some recourses, like public access laws, check out Assistance Dogs International.
